Interior Painting in Chicago
Hiring the best interior painters in the Chicagoland area is easy when you work with OnDemand Painters. We commit to providing the most comprehensive service quality in Chicago.
Chicago two-flats and pre-1960 homes almost always have plaster walls. Many also have lead paint in older layers. We know how to handle both — proper plaster prep and lead-safe work practices are built into every Chicago interior job we take on.
Most people think interior painting is simple. Grab a roller, pick a color, knock it out over the weekend. Then reality sets in. Tape lines bleed. Roller marks show up when the light hits the wall. That patch you thought was smooth? It telegraphs right through the finish coat.
Interior painting is about prep. The actual painting part is maybe 30 percent of the job. The rest is getting surfaces ready so the paint goes on right and stays looking good for years.
Here is how we approach every interior project at OnDemand Painters.
First, we protect everything. Furniture gets moved to the center of the room or out entirely. Floors get covered with canvas drop cloths, not plastic — canvas stays put and absorbs drips. Light switch plates, outlet covers, and hardware all come off. We tape off trim, ceilings, and any surface that is not getting painted.
Next comes prep work. We fill nail holes, patch dents, and skim-coat any damaged areas. Cracks get opened up slightly so the filler can grip. Once everything is patched, we sand it smooth and wipe down all surfaces to remove dust. If there is old glossy paint, we scuff it so the new coat bonds properly. Stains from water, smoke, or markers get sealed with a stain-blocking primer so they do not bleed through.
Priming is not optional. New drywall, patched areas, and bare wood all need primer. We use high-quality primer matched to the topcoat for the best adhesion and coverage. On previously painted walls in good shape, primer may not be needed everywhere, but we always prime where it matters.
Then we paint. We cut in edges by hand first — around trim, ceiling lines, corners, and outlets. Cutting in takes patience and a steady hand. After edges are done, we roll the walls using the right nap roller for the texture. Smooth walls get a short nap. Textured walls need a thicker nap to get into the grooves. We maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks and work in sections so the paint blends evenly.
We use Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore paints. These are professional-grade products that cover better, last longer, and look better than what you find at the big box stores. For homes where people are living during the project, we use low-VOC and zero-VOC options. These have almost no smell and are safe for kids and pets right away.
Most rooms get two coats of finish paint. Some deep colors need three. We let each coat dry fully before applying the next — rushing this step is where a lot of DIY jobs go wrong.
After the final coat dries, we remove all tape carefully, touch up any spots, and reinstall hardware and switch plates. We do a walkthrough with you to make sure everything looks right before we clean up and leave.
A typical bedroom takes one day. A full house with multiple rooms usually runs three to five days depending on size, condition of the walls, and color changes. We give you a clear timeline before we start so you know what to expect.
We have been doing this for over 20 years. Every painter on the job works for us directly — no subcontractors. That means consistent quality and someone who is accountable if anything needs attention after the job is done.

Interior Painting questions
How long does interior painting take? expand_more
A single bedroom typically takes one day. A full interior with multiple rooms runs three to five days depending on the size of the home, wall condition, and how many color changes are involved. We will give you a detailed timeline during your estimate so there are no surprises.
Do I need to move my furniture before you arrive? expand_more
No. We handle all furniture moving as part of the job. We shift everything to the center of the room or move it out entirely, then cover it with canvas drop cloths. When the room is done, we put everything back where it was.
What kind of paint do you use? expand_more
We use Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore exclusively. These are professional-grade paints that provide better coverage, richer color, and longer durability than builder-grade or big box store brands. For occupied homes, we offer low-VOC and zero-VOC options that have almost no odor.
How do I pick the right colors? expand_more
We can help with color selection. We will bring sample swatches and recommend colors based on your room lighting, existing furniture, and the feel you are going for. We always suggest testing a sample area on the wall before committing — colors look different on a wall than they do on a small chip.
Will you fix wall damage before painting? expand_more
Yes. Our price includes patching nail holes, filling dents, repairing small cracks, and sanding everything smooth. For larger damage like water-stained drywall or significant plaster repair, we will note it during the estimate and include the cost upfront.
Interior Painting for Chicago homes
Common home types we work on
Porous Chicago common brick requires breathable paints to prevent moisture trapping and efflorescence. Plaster interiors demand careful prep with lime-based fillers; absorbs paint unevenly unlike drywall. Two-flats and three-flats involve tenant coordination and shared walls. Enclosed porches and basements need ventilation focus. Older wood elements (trim, siding) may have lead or asbestos. Low-VOC paints recommended for enclosed porches and attics. Workers Cottages are often small with tight interior spaces.
