Wallpaper Removal in Kansas City
Professional wallpaper removal and surface prep. We strip old wallpaper, repair the wall underneath, and leave it paint-ready.
Kansas City Shirtwaist homes and postwar ranches frequently have wallpaper throughout. Summer humidity can soften old adhesive, which actually helps removal but means the walls need thorough drying before priming.
Most wallpaper does not come off easy. The stuff from the 1970s through the 1990s was glued down with adhesives that were built to last forever. That is great for keeping wallpaper on the wall, but terrible when you want it gone.
Protecting the room and identifying the paper
We start every wallpaper removal job the same way. We protect your floors, furniture, and trim with plastic sheeting and painter's tape. Then we figure out what kind of wallpaper we are dealing with. Vinyl-coated paper comes off differently than fabric-backed or foil wallpaper. The method depends on the material.
Score, steam, and strip
For most jobs we use a combination of scoring, steaming, and chemical strippers. First we score the surface with a perforating tool. This creates tiny holes that let moisture get behind the paper. Then we apply steam or a liquid remover that softens the adhesive underneath. The paper loosens up and we peel it away in sections using broad knives and scrapers.
Some wallpaper has been painted over. That makes it harder. We have to score through the paint layer first, then work the steam underneath. It takes longer, but rushing it means gouging the drywall. We do not rush it.
Removing the adhesive residue
Once the paper is off, the real work starts. There is almost always adhesive residue left on the wall. If you paint over that residue, the paint will bubble and peel within a year. We wash the walls with a stripping solution to remove every trace of old glue. We go over the surface by hand to make sure it is clean.
Wall repair and priming
Then we inspect the wall underneath. Older homes often have drywall or plaster damage hidden behind the wallpaper. We see torn paper facing, small gouges, nail pops, and sometimes water stains. We repair all of that before moving forward. We skim coat any rough areas with joint compound, sand them smooth, and apply a bonding primer.
The wall is now ready for paint or new wallcovering. We prime with a product designed to seal the surface and give the new finish something to grip. If you are going straight to paint, we can handle that too. Same crew, same visit.
Timeline and multiple layers
A typical room takes one to two days depending on how many layers of wallpaper are on the wall and how much repair the surface needs. We have seen homes with three or four layers stacked on top of each other. Each layer adds time, but the process stays the same.
Protecting the wall underneath
The biggest concern homeowners have is damage to the wall. That is a fair concern. DIY wallpaper removal often ends with torn drywall facing and uneven surfaces. We have the tools and the patience to get the paper off without destroying what is behind it. And when we do find damage, we fix it on the spot.
You get a clean, smooth, paint-ready wall. No leftover paste. No rough patches. No guessing whether the next coat of paint will stick.
Shirtwaists and postwar ranches are full of wallpaper
Two housing types dominate this market for wallpaper removal. The Kansas City Shirtwaist, with brick on the first floor and wood or shingle above, and the postwar ranches across both sides of the state line. Both eras used wallpaper heavily, often in several layers, and often in kitchens and bathrooms where it was treated as a moisture solution.
Layers are the thing that changes the job. Each layer was hung with a different adhesive, and the oldest is frequently on unprimed plaster, which means the paper is bonded directly to the wall surface with nothing between them. Removing that without tearing the plaster face is slow work, and it is the main reason wallpaper removal quotes vary so much between crews.
Humidity cuts both ways
KC summer humidity softens old adhesive, which genuinely helps removal. The tradeoff is drying time: once the paper and paste are off, the wall is damp, and priming a damp wall traps that moisture under the new finish. We let walls dry fully before priming, and in humid stretches that is a real part of the schedule rather than a formality.
What is under the paper
Wallpaper is often hiding something. In these houses it is usually one of three things: plaster that was cracked and papered over instead of repaired, a previous layer of paper that would not come off, or a wall that was never primed. We find out during removal and tell you what the wall actually needs before painting, since the repair is frequently the larger half of the job.
Steam, scoring and knowing when to stop
This part is genuinely case by case, and often wall by wall within the same house.
Stripping all the way to bare plaster gives you a clean substrate with nothing left to fail underneath, and it is the right answer when the layers are releasing reasonably and the plaster behind them is sound.
Skim coating over a bottom layer that is firmly stuck can give you a flatter, more durable wall, and it avoids tearing up plaster that is doing its job. It depends on that layer being genuinely well adhered, which we test rather than assume.
Which way a wall goes depends on how many layers there are, what adhesive was used, whether the plaster was primed, and what condition it is in once we start opening it up. We often cannot tell until the first section comes off. When we find something that changes the picture, we stop, show you, explain the options and the cost difference, and work out the best approach with you before going further.

Wallpaper Removal questions
How long does wallpaper removal take? expand_more
A single room with one layer of wallpaper usually takes one day. If there are multiple layers, paint over the wallpaper, or wall damage underneath, plan for two days per room. We will give you an accurate timeline during the estimate.
Will removing wallpaper damage my walls? expand_more
Some minor surface damage is normal, especially in older homes. The difference is how it gets handled. We repair any torn drywall paper, gouges, or rough spots before we leave. When we are done, the wall is smooth and ready for paint. Not a patchwork of scars.
Can I just paint over old wallpaper instead? expand_more
You can, but we do not recommend it. Seams, bubbles, and texture from the wallpaper will show through the paint. Over time the edges lift and the paint peels. Removing the wallpaper first gives you a flat, stable surface that holds paint for years.
What if there are multiple layers of wallpaper? expand_more
We handle that regularly. Some homes have three or four layers stacked up over the decades. Each layer needs to be removed separately. It takes longer and costs more, but the process is the same. We will let you know what we find during the estimate.
Do you also paint the walls after removing wallpaper? expand_more
Yes. Most customers want us to paint right after removal since the walls are already prepped. Same crew handles both, so there is no gap between jobs and no second contractor to schedule.
Why does wallpaper removal cost more in some older Kansas City homes? expand_more
Layers and what is underneath them. Shirtwaists and postwar ranches often have several layers hung with different adhesives, and the oldest layer is frequently on unprimed plaster, bonded directly to the wall with nothing between. Getting that off without damaging the plaster face is slow work, and it is the main reason quotes differ between crews.
What happens if the wall is damaged under the wallpaper? expand_more
It often is, and we show you what we find before any painting starts. Wallpaper in these homes commonly covers cracked plaster that was papered rather than repaired, an older layer that would not come off, or a wall that was never primed. From there it is case by case: stripping to bare plaster gives the cleanest substrate, while skim coating over a firmly adhered bottom layer can give a flatter wall without tearing up sound plaster. Which is better depends on the layers, the adhesive, and the condition of the plaster underneath, and it can differ from wall to wall in one house. We lay out the options and the cost difference and settle on the approach with you.
Wallpaper Removal for Kansas City homes
Kansas City has its own signature. The Shirtwaist, with brick on the first floor and wood or shingle above. We paint a lot of them, plus Tudors in Brookside, Craftsman bungalows in Waldo, and suburban homes across both sides of the state line. From historic Hyde Park to new builds in Overland Park, we've done the work.
KC summers hit 85%+ humidity, and that's hard on paint during application and curing. We have two good exterior painting windows. Late April through early June, and mid-September through mid-October. On Shirtwaist homes we use masonry-appropriate coatings on the brick lower level and exterior-grade paints up top, all in one project with one crew.
Where we work
We cover the full KC metro on both sides of the state line. From the Plaza, Brookside, and Waldo to Overland Park, Leawood, Lee's Summit, Liberty, and Independence.
